An air conditioning system can cause the growth of mold in the ductwork that it uses to deliver cool air to the various rooms of your home. These ducts are difficult to clean using normal methods. Mold that is growing in them can become detached from the ductwork and enter into the air circulation of your residence. This could pose a serious health hazard.

Using an Ozone Generator

ducts

Using an ozone generator can kill the mold in your ductwork. These units can be rented or bought from many locations. They should be set up at the intake of your duct system. Before turning the generator on, cover all the vents in your home with plastic to keep air from escaping. This will cause the ozone to build up in your ducts and provide an ozone shock treatment. The ozone generator should be run at its highest setting for several hours in order to expose any mold growing in your ducts to a sufficiently high level.

Airing Out Your Home

When the ozone treatment is done, uncover the vents in your home and run the air conditioning system to get everything flushed out. You may notice the acrid smell of ozone while this is happening.
